Zoetis established an initiative to create a comprehensive Scientific Computing and High Performance Computing (HPC) environment that would solve immediate business needs while also scaling to support future growth. IT resources were constrained to support such a unique initiative — the challenge was one of limited resources, limited experience, and time constraints.

Zoetis requested the consulting services from RCH Solutions for the implementation of the initial two phases of this Research Computing strategy. RCH supported this venture both remotely and on-site in Kalamazoo, MI, with the much of work being performed at our Wayne, PA offices, supplemented with on-site support at Zoetis in Exton, PA. To facilitate seamless adoption and integration, RCH actively involved the Central IT team (again, Exton, PA) throughout this process.

Working with both the business units and IT, RCH was able to assess, design, implement, and support the proper Scientific Computing environment including:

  • Assessment of current state of Scientific Computing and HPC
  • Formal set of recommendations to optimize and grow capabilities
  • An assessment of exiting infrastructure
  • Three (3) Phase Roadmap
  • Seamless integration with IT involvement
  • Best Practices and Process Options
  • Integrated strategic plan using proven solutions and best practices
  • Proven scalable compute and storage solution for sophisticated data analysis

RCH worked directly with the internal IT staff, research scientists, and application vendors to provide the optimum scalable solution for this highly visible, dynamic environment Scientific Computing and HPC. The project included services provisioning on Cisco UCS and NetApp storage. In addition to designing and implementing Zoetis’ new Scientific Computing environment, RCH also developed and delivered comprehensive platform and operational documentation in support of their Help Desk. Augmenting documentation, RCH provided operational training to their Central IT staff and Scientific Application and HPC training to their Research scientists.

Zoetis now has a comprehensive, flexible, scalable, Scientific Computing and HPC environment solution to support their needs over the next several years. The customer was able to leverage the specific experience of RCH in evaluating, designing, and supporting compute and data management in the Life Sciences R&D realm. This deliverable has allowed Zoetis to attain valuable insight into complex disease models on a large, industrial scale, as well as supporting the drug discovery pipeline from target validation to potential ID of candidates.
